Switching back to My Yahoo classic

On Thursday, Yahoo rolled out changes to my.yahoo.com updating the layout of the page with a beta version. One of the items that seemingly got lost was the link to switch back to the classic layout. I’ve played with the new layout and still prefer the old classic style that I’ve used for years now. Fortunately, at least for the time being, you can still switch back to the classic layout using this URL.

Btw, send feedback to Yahoo about the New Yahoo Mail.

[Update: July 9th 2008] Well that was short lived, below is a message from my current Yahoo page. Thanks a lot Yahoo.

[Update: July 9th 2008 8:30am] I posted a comment last night to this Yahoo blog post asking James, a My Yahoo! Product Lead, why he provided a link to switch back to classic knowing it would last only a week and the comment was deleted. I had included a link to the post I wrote about why Yahoo has frustrated me and indicating that this decision to kill Yahoo Classic was simply yet another reason. I guess that was just too over-the-top.
[Update: July, 14th 2008] Now that we’ve all be forced over to the new page I’m now getting hundreds of search engine hits on this post. Looks like I’m not the only one who like the “Classic” style.
[Update: July 15th 2008] According to one commenter Yahoo is now deleting requests to support the Classic mode from their web site properties though this page is still alive at least for now. I’m now getting 100’s Internet search hits for this post so this is a pretty popular subject. Feel free to digg this post and see if we can shine a little more attention on this.
[Update: January 25th 2009] How I replaced Yahoo.

[Update: August 11th 2009] I get enough email about this that I decided to record a video that illustrates the technique people posted here on how to switch back. Sadly, I no longer use Yahoo other than to forward an old email address I still keep alive but that’s it.
[Update: November 7th 2009] Removed the video as it didn’t slow the rate of email I get about people’s Yahoo’s problems.

  1. I must admit, I don’t get Yahoo. What do they do? I never visit the site (maybe once a year), I don’t know what services they provide, and going to their homepage just now to check it out I can’t find anything really useful that would make me want to come back. I must admit though that Yahoo seems VERY US focused (I am in Australia) so that can’t help.

  2. Craig,
That’s a good question. Over the years they’ve clearly lost focus which has left them in the position they’re currently in. I don’t use Yahoo anywhere near as much as I used to and in fact I’m switching everything away from Yahoo. The main reason I wanted my old page back is I didn’t/don’t want to learn their new layout. I’d just as soon stick with what I had and eventually stop using it altogether. One of the only remaining parts for me is the Fantasy sport section which I don’t think is available in the new layout though I don’t really care to spend the time and find out.

  3. Steve
Thanks for the URL to be able to switch back to the old Yahoo format! We all resistant to change at times but the new layout is not so user friendly and does not flow. I changed back. Now how to get rid of the you sure want to see why cant the site remember I have made a choice?

  4. Thank you for this post! I tried a few days ago to find if there was a switchback link and could not find it. This works (as you say, at least for now).

  5. The link to change back no longer works as it will just take you back to the new format when you log back on to your homepage.

  6. I don’t like the "new" my yahoo page because it has too much advertising on it that draws from the coolness of the actual page. The classic my yahoo was really great. Too bad they’re being lame about this "new" my yahoo page.

  7. Here was my feedback comment back to yahoo. Can you say boycott.
Why don’t you yahoo guys get the hint that some people don’t want to change to the "NEW" yahoo. You guys can track everything else, why don’t you track how many times people keep changing back to their old yahoo page. You need to realize that you yahoo decision makers created this monster, by giving us the ability to customize our own pages. This was the great part and reason I have kept "my yahoo" page as my home page for many years. Now some (yahoo or yahoo’s) in management have deiced that advertising dollars are more important than user loyalty. You can either tell your users how to change back ( like maybe a link that doesn’t get removed from the page ) or you can lose your users ( and me ) to GOOGLE. What nerve! To take away from people a freedom that you gave to them in the first place. And worst yet, a real person probably won’t respond to this feedback. " The American Way"

  8. The increase in the number of hits on your post seems to be the result of Yahoo taking down all of the negative comments on their sites.
Last night I searched for an answer on how to switch back to classic my yahoo and the results included a large number of hits to Answers.yahoo.com. Today, they all seem to be gone. All the top links are for switching back to classic mail. Your post is the first in the list on this subject. I guess if you don’t like what the people say, you can just ignore them and censor their comments.
Pretty stupid on yahoo’s part. first they change the formula a la Coke Vs. Classic Coke and then they slam everyone a la the phone companies years ago and now they practice stalinistic tactics by deleting the negative press and that’s supposed to make it all right. Pretty Damn Scary!!!

  9. Dear Sirs,
I hate the new Yahoo look. The classic one was just right for me. Why should you decide what I SHOULD LIKE?

  10. me, too… i’d like to leave but i feel stuck. i appreciate the free service that yahoo! has given me over the years but nowadays i just feel like a victim.
i’ve been using yahoo! mail as my secondary email forever. i really appreciated that the mail preview pane on the my yahoo page. now i have to use my password to see the preview. giant step backward. and they have all my portfolio information.
i’ll probably move my portfolio’s to google finance. not sure what to do about yahoo! mail. i’ve read a few blogs on how to access the free yahoo! mail via imap but i haven’t gotten it to work yet. once i do, i’m out of here! yahoo! is the only web service that has gotten consistently worse with time!

  11. josh,
Sorry to report more bad news but Yahoo’s IMAP support cost ~#20/yr and I’ve found the spamguard plus to be of no benefit. I’m switching to Google myself.

  12. I had a similar experience- I argued over email with Yahoo customer support. They told me that users cannot opt out of test marketing. Which made me wonder- and hope- that this would fail STUPENDOUSLY, as I think it will. I counted click steps and loading with the new design- and I am making twice as many moves as the last interface just to do the simple mail viewing I did ease before… It’s insane- I can’t BELIEVE this would have survived market research- so while they looked at some metrics on say, usage- they evidently and obviously left out the biggest part of the equation- the customer opinion… The Yahoo CS person said it’s permanent and I too have found that there are NO ANSWERS on Yahoo answers on this subject. I too posted and saw it removed from the history.. That’s REALLY BAD PR-wise, do’t you think?
It’s going to be tough to bite the seconndary email change- but Yahoo has really shot themselves in the foot here. I asked the tech person if there wasn’t a Google Spy there planning this new program design- because people are going to leave and go there in droves.

  13. Wait- it worked. My last post above was written last night after weeks of arguing about it to Yahoo…. But this morning- it’s magically back to Classic!! Wooo hooo! It really worked! Is it possible that Yahoo people are reading this blog? Because it hadn’t changed back to the old design despite every trickery I put forth to do so—and suddenly it reverted back.
Maybe they saw a consumer drop off suddenly take place?
That is heartening on this rainy east coast day. Truly.
    Liz

  14. Hi Liz,
My account is still stuck with the new version though I no longer use My Yahoo! so it’s not a big deal. I’ve changed my email account and stopped using all things Yahoo with the exception of the LaunchCast music service.

  15. 4 of my 5 home computers have the classic look, but mine has the sucky look. I need two clicks to get to my email account instead of one. At least my email account page hasn’t changed. I started on Yahoo when they first started up and have remained a loyal user. I even bought 200 shares of stock in the company. Now they suck!!!

  16. I just switched it. Not sure what step did it.
I uninstalled Yahoo Toolbar using add/remove.
Went to local settings in my directory and removed history, temp files and temporary internet files.
Using regedit I searched for "yahoo" (leave out the quotes). I deleted the ones for "Yahoo Toolbar" (I had 2) – do not delete anything else !! And YAHOO – back to original.
    Hope it works for you.

  17. To get back to the classic Yahoo home page install Firefox and delete the cookies for Yahoo.
This worked for me after many hours of searching.

  18. Who ever decided about the new page needs to be bitch slaped by there own moma.
I think it sucks change it back.

  19. The new yahoo home page ‘sucks’. I’m a tech director at a small midwestern school and we use yahoo for our email accounts (I know not too secure but it was set up before I started). I"m switching every one over to gmail, until we get our own school email set up, becuase I’m tired of all the complaints. It takes several more clicks to get to your email accounts and it is not a very user friendly site. Did they even try a beta run on this? I don’t see how it passed. Add me and the 100 or so accounts I’ll be switching over to gmail to the list of unsatisfied customers.

  20. yahoo has been my home page for years. not anymore. i liked the classic page much better than the new one i am forced to use. the old page setup was easy to manuver around on.

  21. Maybe the guys on the top floor at Yahoo need to get out of the office, fire the idiots forcing this down our throats and get back in touch with the public at large! This STINKS of a few greedy people convincing ‘the brass’ that they can make them ‘more profittable! They just took away the opt out on the homepage, not 11 NOV, yet!!!

  22. i do not like any thing but the classis yahoo……………… how do i change it back to classis?

  23. I liked the Yahoo classic and have resisted the change over to the new yahoo. But it seems that yahoo has spent more and more time on finding ways to prevent people from switching back to the classic. It is to bad they didn’t spend more time on finding out that some people do not want to change to the new yahoo. So for me it is a Good Bye to yahoo until they learn to trust my ablility to know what I want.

  24. PLEASE PLEASE I WANT BACK CLASSIC YAHOO!!!!!!!!! WHY WHY DID YOU DO THIS TO ME?????????????????

  25. I agree with everyone.
I HATE THE NEW YAHOO PAGE. I WANT THE CASSIC YAHOO PAGE BACK!! I CAN’T STAND THE NEW YAHOO PAGE.

  26. I ACTUALLY PREFER THE CLASSIC YAHOO PAGE AS I WAS USING IT SINCE ABOUT TWO YEARS . I FEEL MORE COMFORTABLE BECAUSE IT IS CLEAR, SIMPLE AND BRIEF
    THANKS

  27. I HATE THE NEW YAHOO WEBSITE WHY I AM FORCED TO USE IT???????????????????!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!I WANT BACK THE OLD ONE.

  28. I hate what yahoo is trying to shove down our throats. They are forcing ,,,,, excuse me trying to force everybody to like their new yahoo site but obviously it is not working. I have already sent them a message that I am now looking for a new home page.At least they should continue to give us that option to keep our old Yahoo classic home page otherwise forget them and the boat they rode in on.

  29. What really gets me mad about the new yahoo page is them taking away the choice of either keeping the new sucky page or returning to yahoo classic. They will lose a lot of people because of this, including me and my entire family. Thanks a lot yahoo ! I will be finding a new home page. I guess Yahoo is the new communist home page site. WHAT A BUNCH OF YAHOOS!!

  30. yes! we only been with a computer for one year and we just recently had to take our brand new hp pavillion pc desk top only five months old and replace it for another one of a upgrade due to it did not let us use it with the new yahoo. nor the internet 8 this one is only three days old also has a 64bit and it is now as of today since the new yahoo. came on is locking up. you need to make it so people whom was able to use the yahoo. classic homepage the one its been for some time be able to use it if they want to or we also are going to leave yahoo. sorrry can’t afford another pc desk top unit. if any questions please fell free to call me at 239-333-5163 and i will send copy’s of paperwork and where we had to exchange it at to prove it . so please let us be able to use which one we want. thanks. the reese.

  31. I absolutely do not like the new yahoo homepage. m.yahoo.com why can’t we just use the classic yahoo?? I simply will not deal with the new page. I have changed my homepage to bing.com and will leave it at that unless yahoo switches back to classic. If they don’t change it back, then goodbye to yahoo. Looks like I’m not the only one that feels this way.

  32. i have been a customer with yahoo from day one. if they refuse to give me a simple way to get back to yahoo classic. i guess i will have to give up my yahoo account and boycott forever! kinda pointless to waste my time yapping to yahoo about a problem they created. i guess they must want my email address back!

  33. Change yahoooooooooooooo classic back or i be force to DUMP THIS NEW yahoo page. ? !!!!!!! comprendeeeeeeeeeeeee!!!!

  34. The new yahoo home page SUCKS. My wife & I HATED it. I use to visit it about 10 times a day for news, weather, market and email. Now, I am using Google more and more. If you hate it, don’t go there. When they see the number of hits go down, they will switch it back. Yahoo got 100,199,679 hits today per Statbrain.com.

  35. I hate to hover over the news section. This used to be my favorite section, now its all scrolling and hovering. Neverending scrolling and hovering, worse feature ever. Not to mention it takes longer to load and its hard to find things. The new site blows chunks.
    BRING YAHOO CLASSIC BACK!

  36. This new Yahoo page design stinks. It tells me once again that even more of my freedoms are being taken away and I have to get by with what I am FORCED to have and I don’t have much of a choice. "Thanks" my yahoo pals, Yahoo has been my page for years not anymore.

  37. I would love Yahoo to let people CHOOSE. To have the right to switch on the Yahoo page each and every user prefers. Seems simple and fair enough. I also like the old yahoo page, the classic mail, I loved an older version of Yahoo messenger more than the actual one, etc etc…

  38. I really do not like the New Yahoo either. I wish they would still give us the opportunity to switch back to what we are familar with. I have been with Yahoo for years now and I cant even stand to look at the home page any more.

  39. Please switch it back to the classic home page layout. Iam lookin in to a new homepage if it dont switch back soon

  40. This "New" Yahoo page is hideous. I have bee a Yahoo customer for over 10 years now and I am about to switch to Google or Bing. Thanks Yahoo for ruining a good thing. For those of you who may own shares of Yahoo, I advise you to sell now before they become worthless. Yahoo is going to lose 1/3 of their customer base immediately and another 1/4 of whats remaining over the next six months. I am only hanging around one week to see if they bring Classic Yahoo back. After that I am gone!

  41. i bookmarked the login page for yahoo email before they changed it on me. i now use my local radio station as my homepage and then when i want to view my yahoo mail i click on the bookmark link to the login page. that way i never have to use the main page to access my email. heres the link just bookmark it https://login.yahoo.com/config/mail?.intl=us

  42. The new site want honor my e-mail adress ,and I can’t get on site I will have to go on another web site. I want my old yahoo back ( I can not get to my e-mails ) thanks for nothing ! !

  43. This new yahoo is to busy. Why wont the powers that "be" give us the choice??? If they dont bring back the url to be able to go back to the classic page I’m shutting down my yahoo account.

  44. I HATE THE NEW YAHOO HOME PAGE AS ALL THE OTHERS DO. tooooo MUCH ADVERTISING/ PLEASEEEEEEE GIVE US AN OPTION.YOU ARE SHOVING THIS DOWN OUR THROATS !

  45. *Yes, I must concur with everyone else and it’s true that the new Yahoo Homepage really sucks like an old soggy, acidity lemon that’s been the fridge for way too long! *Please, PLease, and PLEASE, Bring bach my Classic Yahoo Page that is/was much better than this new one? …And while you’re at it, Please, PLease, and PLEASE, bring back the Classic Yahoo Mail Page instead of the one that’s there now, and it too sucks like an old soggy acidity lemon as well???????????? *Jackie McPherson…

  46. why cant you leave a good thing alone….I wish ou would change back to the old home page I was one for (if its not broke dont fix it) so I guess its good bye to your new sucky yahoo home page you guys need to look at what we like instead making others suffer with what you like or want us to use I thought this was america and we had choices here wtf?

  47. The new Yahoo is completely and totally lame! It’s as if the "think tank" worked to come up with the lamest ideas they could, and then see if the public would swallow them. I tried, but continued to vomit them back up. I’m Google bound for now! Thanks Yahoo. Score one for the absolutely clueless!

  48. I hate it hate it hate it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! You better give me back classic why mess with a good thing? Everyone you can send them a response tell them it blows large chunks and they will give us the option to change back !!!

  49. I HATE THE NEW YAHOO HOME PAGE I JUST CAN’T GET ON WITH IT BRING IT BACK WHERE YOU CAN SWICH BACK THE PAGE

  50. I HAVE NOTIFIED YAHOO MYSELF WHEN THEY CHANGED….I DON’T LIKE THE NEW HOME PAGE AT ALL AND I DONT LIKE MY CONTACT LIST WHICH AT ONE TIME WAS MY ADDRESS BOOK…I LIKED BEING ABLE TO SEE WHAT FRIENDS WERE ONLINE AND WHO WASNT ONLINE…THE MEMBER’S OF THIS SITE ARE THE ONE’S WHO SUPPORT THIS SITE AND HAVE BEEN MEMBER’S FOR MANY YEAR’S…WE SHOULD BE ABLE TO CHOOSE WHICH HOME PAGE AND EMAIL SET-UP WE WANT TO HAVE!!!! THERE ARE ALOT OF MEMBER’S WHO AGREE THAT THIS NEW WAY ISNT GOOD AT ALL!!!!

  51. I also hate the new yahoo homepage and will be saying goodbye yahoo, if they cant give the poeple what they want.and for me its the classic homepage.

  52. First I want to thank Steve for this site because it makes me realize I’m not the only one who hates the New Yahoo.
What is wrong with those YAHOO people ???
They have brought me to tears and my blood pressure is sky high. They have a link to go back to CLASSIC but it doesn’t work !!!
It just sends you back to the tutorial page with tons of THEIR QUESTIONS. None solve the problem.
Over the past year this has happened a few times but after much stress and frustration I think Yahoo just switched it back.
I wrote to them several times.
For me the worst was the "MOVE" ( moving my e-mails into catagories) THEY TOOK THE QUICK SCROLL BAR AWAY AND BUT THE UP & DOWN ARROW WHICH IS SLOOOOOOOOOOW AS MOLASSES. MY FAMILY E-MAILS ARE AT THE END OF THE ALPHABET
SO I DON’T UNDERSTAND HOW THEY COULD POSSIBLY THINK THAT WAS AN IMPROVEMENT !!! iT’S LIKE GOING BACK TO PONY EXPRESS MAIL DELIVERY !!!
    YES, I’M SHOUTING !!!
YAHOO, CAN YOU HEAR ME NOW ????????

  53. I can’t believe they replaced the the old homepage with that garbage. Let us have the option to return to YAHOO CLASSIC!

  54. I CANNOT STAND THE NEW YAHOO HOMEPAGE! I WILL SOON BE SWITCHING TO A NEW SITE…YAHOO SHOULD GIVE PEOPLE THE OPTION TO EITHER KEEP THE CLASSIC OR SWITCH TO THE NEWW ONE. YAHOO YOU COULD SAY GOODBYE TO LOTS OF CUSTOMERS INCLUDING ME!

  55. type in, my.yahoo.com it is not the classic .
or go to your e-mail and in the upper right hand corner click on my yahoo, then i just copy and paste that link to where it suppose to be to make it your home page.
